Dr Marinos Ioannides represented the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage and the Cyprus University of Technology at the Clean Oceans and Mapping Our Seas conference held at the Malta Maritime Museum.
As part of the session “Traditional Boat Digitisation: Case Studies from Cyprus, Malta, and Norway” the three experts from each country shared their experiences and methodologies in preserving maritime heritage artefacts using 3D technologies. Cyprus’ contribution focused on the DHRLabs digitisation of the last Liberty class fishing trawler the Lambousa, documented in the EU-funded project MENEMOSYNE and recently incorporated into Europeana as part of the TwinIt! initiative representing Cypriot maritime history.
This fascinating panel showed how cultural heritage can open a wider debate and understanding of the challenges that face our oceans today highlighting issues including the climate crisis, protection of maritime and coastal ecosystems, overfishing and loss of traditional skills and knowledge about our seas.

This hybrid event, hosted by Heritage Malta and Stavanger Maritime Museum – MUST (Norway), provided a unique opportunity to learn from industry leaders and explore cutting-edge digitisation projects.
